Pie-ning for You

I don’t know about y’all, but I feel wildly cool when I make pie crust. Flour is everywhere, and I love the challenge. Plus, there’s just something about walking around the kitchen with a rolling pin that makes me feel like a purebred badass. I love it!

Pro Tip: Put your butter in the freezer now while you’re thinking about making pie, so when the mood strikes, you’re ready to roll (pun intended).

Homemade Pie Crust Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 to 3 tablespoons cold water
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons frozen butter

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Butter: Grate your frozen butter into a bowl and place it back in the freezer while you prepare the other ingredients.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Add the frozen, shredded butter to the flour mixture. Mix with a pastry blender or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add Cold Water: Add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing with a fork after each addition until the pastry dough just holds together.

  1. Shape and Chill: Shape the dough into a ball, wrap it in saran wrap, and let it rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes or overnight if prepping ahead.
  2. Roll Out the Crust: Once the dough has rested, roll it out to fit your 9-inch pie plate. If you’re filling and baking the crust, follow the baking instructions from your filling recipe.
  3. Blind Baking: If baking the pie crust by itself, preheat the oven to 400°F (205°C). Line the crust with pie weights or beans and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
